About Silk

Ever heard of the phrase “Queen of Textiles”? Well, this is what silk has been referred to as for more than 4,000 years. To quote Oscar de la Renta: "Silk does for the body what diamonds do for the hand." After all, it is the ultimate fabric that simply exudes sophistication.

Introduction to Silk

Silk is one of the world’s oldest and most luxurious natural fabrics, prized for its softness, sheen, and strength. Originating in ancient China over 5,000 years ago, silk is produced by silkworms—most notably the Bombyx mori—which spin cocoons from a continuous silk thread. These threads are carefully unwound, washed, and woven into fabric. The result is a smooth, breathable material that feels cool in summer and warm in winter, making it ideal for premium bedding, clothing, and accessories.

To ensure transparency and peace of mind, each of our silk duvets and pillows includes a discreet inspection zip, allowing you to see the quality of the silk filling for yourself. This is our promise: no compromises, just the highest standards in silk bedding.

Mulberry Silk

At Jasmine Silk, we use only 100% mulberry silk—the highest quality silk available, known for its long fibers, natural sheen, and exceptional softness. All of our products feature a luxurious Charmeuse finish, with a smooth satin-like surface, and are crafted in 19 or 22 momme weights for durability and comfort. We do not use Tussah or wild silk, which tends to be coarser and less refined. Our commitment to premium mulberry silk ensures every item meets the highest standards of quality and luxury.

What makes high quality silk?

High-quality silk is defined by three key factors: fiber type, strand length, and purity. At Jasmine Silk, we use only Grade A long-strand mulberry silk, the finest available. This silk is harvested from Bombyx mori silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves, producing strong, smooth, and naturally lustrous fibers. Long-strand silk creates a softer, more durable fabric with fewer joins, resulting in a cleaner finish and longer lifespan. Lower-grade silks often contain short or broken fibers, which feel rougher and wear out faster. By using only the best, we ensure every product delivers exceptional comfort and lasting quality.

A Guide to Momme

Momme (pronounced "moe-mee") is a traditional unit of weight used to measure the density and quality of silk fabric. Similar to thread count in cotton, a higher momme indicates a thicker, more durable, and more luxurious silk. For bedding, a momme weight between 16 and 22 is considered high quality. At Jasmine Silk, we use 19 and 22 momme silk in our products to ensure a perfect balance of softness, strength, and longevity. Lower momme silks—typically under 12—feel thinner, wear out quickly, and lack the smooth, rich texture associated with premium silk. Please see the Momme guide below for futher help.

Momme & Weave Guide

Different silk weaves have different typical momme ranges:

Gauze

3 to 5 momme weight

Chiffon

6 to 8 momme weight

Habutai

5 to 16 momme weight

Charmeuse

16 to 22 momme weight

Silk Care Tips

To keep your silk looking and feeling its best, it’s important to follow proper care guidelines. We recommend hand washing or using a gentle machine cycle with cold water and a mild, silk-safe detergent. Avoid bleach or fabric softeners, as they can weaken the natural fibers. Never wring silk—gently press out excess water and air dry away from direct sunlight. If ironing is needed, use a low heat setting while the fabric is slightly damp.

Always check the care label before washing, as care instructions may vary across different products. With the right care, your silk will stay luxuriously soft and durable for years.
